A Brief Introduction to Jimei University
Jimei University is one of the key universities among the eight universities in Fujian Province.
Jimei University is a multi-disciplined university which mainly focuses on teaching, undergraduate education and the cultivation of applied senior talents with creative spirit and practical abilities. It serves the local economic construction and social development.
Jimei University enrolls students from all over the country. It presently consists of 19 colleges, offering 19 postgraduate programs, 2 course master degrees, 49 undergraduate programs, and 6 associate undergraduate programs in 8 disciplines: Engineering , Agronomy, Economics, Administration，Pedagogy, Science , Literature, and Law. These 8 disciplines, including postgraduate education, undergraduate education, associate undergraduate education, overseas education and adult education, form a comprehensive school-running system. In addition, Jimei University has successfully established joint programs with universities and academic institutes abroad.
Among the 1526 full-time teachers currently in Jimei University, there are 149 professors and 457 associate professors, 192 Ph. D. degree holders, and 742 master degree holders. To date, one professor has been selected as a member of the national level “Thousands of Talents Program”, while 11 professors have been chosen for the same title at the provincial level and 7 have been chosen for membership of “New Century Talents Supporting Plan of High Education College in Fujian Province”. Jimei University now has one jointly employed academician, and three people have respectively been awarded “Outstanding Worker”, “Outstanding Moral Educator”, “Outstanding Ideological and Political Educator” at the national level. Moreover, there are two teaching teams and 29 people have separately received the honor of “ Star of Moral Teaching”, “Excellent Individual at Moral Teaching”, “Outstanding Teacher”, “May 1st Labor Medal”, “New Long March Pioneer “, “Outstanding Educator” at the provincial level. There are 50 professors who enjoy the Special Subsidies from the State Council as well.
Jimei University currently enrolls 22,688 full-time students .The University has fixed assets of around 1.8 billion RMB, and the teaching facilities have been valued at 260 million RMB. It covers an area of 1,275,800 square meters. The whole university is covered by a highly speedy school net with 10G. It recently has adopted the latest IPv6 net technology and wireless Internet technology. The total collection of the university library reaches 2,119,700 volumes, about 1,700,000 electronic books and nearly 2,900 newspapers and magazines in both Chinese and foreign languages. The library also owns a digital information search center and other 43 kinds of databases, including VIP Data Base.
In September 1996, the University Board of Directors was founded. It is the policy making body which makes decision on the university’s big issues. The board serves four years per term. The meeting of the managing directors of the board is held once a year, and the meeting of all members of the board is held once every two years. The Secretary of the Provincial Communist Party Committee of Fujian is the honorary chairperson of the board, while the Governor is the chairperson of the board. Mr. Jia Qinglin, the member of Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC formerly was the honorary chairperson of the board and is now consultant to the board.
Jimei University has won strong support and much attention of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. Former President Jiang Zemin personally inscribed the name of Jimei University and the motto “To enhance the patriotic spirit of Mr. Chen Jiageng(Mr. Tan Kah Kee, founder of the university), and to vitalize the education of China”. Former Premier Li Peng presented the inscriptions to the university “ To enhance the spirit of Mr. Chen Jiageng and to fully develop Jimei University”. Other leaders of the Central Committee such as Qiao shi and Li Lanqing also made specific inscriptions to the development of Jimei University. Li Lanqing not only gave a series of instructions to the merge and reform of the university but also cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony and inspected the university on several occasions to give his guidance. In October, 2004, Jia Qinglin, the member of Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the Chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC also inspected Jimei University and unveiled the bronze statue of Mr. Chen Jiageng. Both Xi Jinping, the member of Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and He Guoqiang, the member of Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and general secretary of the Central Discipline Inspection Commission used to be the chairperson of the University Board of Directors when they were in charge of the administrative work of Fujian province. Both of them inspected the university in person to show their care for its improvement and made great efforts to the reform and development of the university. In July, 2006, State Councilor Chen Zhili inspected the university and spoke highly of the achievements the university had made. In August, 2007, Zhou Ji, Minister of the Ministry of Education of China, made a compliment on the university by saying: “Jimei University has been well developed over the past few years” after his inspection tour to the university. And other leaders from Fujian Province and Xiamen Municipality have inspected Jimei University several times as well.
Through decades of development, the specialties of maritime education and fisheries are the main features of Jimei University. The maritime education tops in the nation and has great impact throughout the nation and the Southeast Asia. It is the important training base to cultivate the senior seafarers in China. The fishery discipline is one of the high-level disciplines in Fujian Province which has certain influence in the nation. The majors of Marine Engineering and Aquaculture are both provincial key majors. And the two majors, namely Marine Engineering, Mechanical Design and Manufacture and its Automation, are the characteristic majors of undergraduate education in the Institutions of Higher Learning in Fujian Province.
Jimei University, while experiencing a speedy and glorious development, is celebrating its 90th anniversary next year. There are three tasks to be accomplished in the following years: First, to do its best to improve the teaching quality and pass with excellent result the Evaluation for Undergraduate Education by the Ministry of Education in 2007; Second, to develop postgraduate education with all efforts; Third, to complete the constructions of the new campus with a floor space up to 500,000 square meters in 2007 to meet the demands of sustainable development.
Jimei University has set up its new strategic object at the beginning of the 21st century. In the first two decades, the university will continue to give priority to education and research to enhance its comprehensive strength. It is seeking opportunities to offer service to the world, to the West Bank Economic Zone of Taiwan Straits and to the ocean. It is making every effort to build itself into one of the best multi-disciplined universities with strong competitiveness in the world.
